The Hole

8/24/09 – SCI FI Wire reported that Chris Massoglia will next be seen in The Hole, directed by genre veteran Joe Dante.  "The Hole is about these brothers who are moving to this small town," Massoglia said. "They're from New York, and they're really bored with their new setup. They find this hole in their basement, and basically whatever your greatest fear is comes out of this hole."  Massoglia described The Hole as a scary psychological thriller. "Each character has something different that they're afraid of, and each thing comes out of the hole and terrorizes them personally," he said. "My character is Dane. I'm the older of the two brothers. And it's me, my little brother and the girl next door who discover the hole and have this battle with it, trying to shut it down."  The film, which also stars Teri Polo and Bruce Dern, has wrapped shooting. However, it remains to be seen when audiences will be able to catch the independent production in theaters. "It doesn't have a distributor yet," Massoglia said. "It's going this fall to the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival. So we'll see."

8/5/09 – SCI FI Wire spoke with director Joe Dante about his new 3-D horror film, The Hole, at San Diego Comic-Con last month.  About the film, “Basically it's an attempt on my part to go back to the '80s, where the idea was to make movies that you could take the whole family to but were scary," Dante said.  "And it has some adult themes, but they're very hidden. ... The storyline is that we meet our family, which is a mom and two kids—one 17 and one 10—who move to this kind of dull suburban home from the bustling excitement of New York City. The kids are kind of miffed about that. And we know there is some kind of mysterious reason why they've moved here. ... When the kids are kind of bored, they go down in the basement, and they find this door with locks on it that leads down into the floor. ... Of course they want to open that door and see what's in there. And with the aid of the girl next door, they succeed in opening this hole, which seems to have no bottom, and during the night, things come out. ... I can't tell you what they are, but I guarantee it's not what you think it is."  The Hole doesn't have a release date yet, but Dante says to expect it soon.

10/22/08 - Teri Polo is set to star in Joe Dante's supernatural feature film The Hole, Variety reported.  Hole, from Bold Films and Benderspink, centers on Susan (Polo), a mother who moves with her teen sons to a rural house where the three are forced to face their fears after discovering a bottomless hole in the basement.  Also cast in the project, penned by Mark L. Smith, is Haley Bennett. She will play Julie, a neighbor who is attracted to one of the sons.  Production on the film, which will be filmed in 3-D, starts Dec. 5 in Vancouver, Canada.

05/19/08 - Director Joe Dante will return to the horror genre with The Hole, a feature film about two brothers who move into a new house to discover a mysterious hole in the basement that seems to have no bottom.  The Hole, which is now in preproduction, was scripted by Mark L. Smith.
