Ready Player One

3/25/15 - Steven Spielberg is set to direct Ready Player One, the popular sci-fi book by Ernest Cline that takes place in a virtual world. Warner Bros will bring it to the screen along with Village Roadshow.  Spielberg and his films are mentioned in the 2011 book. “I also absorbed the complete filmographies of each of his favorite directors, “says the main character Wade Watts at one point as he’s studying the interests of digital utopia creator James Donovan Halliday. “Cameron, Gilliam, Jackson, Fincher, Kubrick, Lucas, Spielberg, Del Toro, Tarantino. And of course Kevin Smith.” There are also references to the Indiana Jones franchise, which Spielberg directed, and E.T. in the wide ranging cultural touchpoints of Ready Player One.  Source:


6/21/10 – Variety reported that Warner Bros. has bought Ready Player One, snapping up feature rights to the debut sci-fi novel by screenwriter Ernie Cline.  The studio has attached Donald De Line to produce with Cline's manager Dan Farah.  Cline will adapt Ready Player One, in which a teen escapes his bleak life in an idyllic virtual world called Oasis. He then finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the game's founder dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize.
