Oblivion 9/26/11 – Variety reported that Joseph Kosinski has settled on Jessica Chastain for one of the two female leads in Universal's untitiled sci-fier starring Tom Cruise. Previously titled Oblivion and/or Horizons, the film revolves around a soldier stationed on a future Earth, the surface of which was destroyed by aliens. When he discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off a chain of events that cause him to question everything he knows. William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek adapted the script based on a graphic novel that Kosinski wrote. Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark are producing through Chernin Entertainment along with Barry Levine of Radical Publishing and Kosinski. Production is expected to start sometime this winter with Universal slating the film to bow July 19, 2013. Disney dropped the pic in March, but Universal picked it up and has made it a top priority, especially with Cruise's longstanding attachment.
6/16/11 - Universal announced that Joseph Kosinski is set to direct Tom Cruise in Oblivion, a fantasy about a former solider who is the last person left on Earth after a war with an alien race. When he encounters a crashed spacecraft with a lone survivor, the two set off on an epic adventure. Oblivion opens July 19, 2013. Oblivion is based on the illustrated novel of the same name.
4/15/11 - Universal is in negotiations to pick up Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi project Horizons with Tom Cruise attached to star. Kosinski will produce with Barry Levine and Jeffrey Silver. With a script by William Monahan and Karl Gadjusek, Horizons was created by Kosinski. The sci-fi film centers on a soldier assigned to patrol a desolate planet who meets a mysterious traveler. An October start is being considered.
8/4/10 - Oblivion, the upcoming Radical illustrated novel from director Joseph Kosinski, has found a home with Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The sci-fi project will act as a Kosinski directing vehicle and will be produced by Radical principal Barry Levine and Kosinski. Radical's Jesse Berger will act as executive producer. The story is set on a future Earth, where civilization lives above the clouds and alien scavengers stalk the irradiated surface below. When a surface drone repairman finds a woman inside a crashed spacepod planetside, it leads him on a journey filled with romance and adventure. Radical is due to release Oblivion this fall. Arvid Nelson is the writer and Andree Wallin is the artist.
7/30/09 - Director Joseph Kosinski is developing Oblivion, based on his own concept, set in a post-apocalyptic Earth where civilization lives above the clouds and scavengers illegally collect artifacts from the polluted and destroyed surface below, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
