Godzilla 11/10/11 - Max Borenstein will write the remake of Godzilla, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Gareth Edwards is attached to direct the creature feature centered on the giant city-destroying and monster-fighting lizard, which is in development at Legendary Pictures. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing along with Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers. Warner Bros. will distribute per its deal with Legendary.
7/26/11 - Deadline.com reported that Legendary Pictures has hired screenwriter David S. Goyer to help create a new blockbuster out of Godzilla. Legendary Pictures is hoping Goyer will have a better understanding of what works about the original monster and will bring that to his script. The new film is still giving a release date of 2012. Gareth Edwards is on board to direct.
1/4/11 - Gareth Edwards, the British filmmaker who wrote and directed Monsters, is closing a deal to develop and direct Godzilla for Legendary Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute per its deal with Legendary. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing along with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers. Legendary picked up the rights to the giant lizard from Japan’s Toho Co. in March 2010. Edwards will now work with a new yet-to-hired writer on the script.
3/29/10 - Godzilla is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan. Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are also producing; Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will be executive producers on the project. The new film is shooting for a 2012 release. "Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has."
8/14/09 - Bloody-Disgusting reported a rumor that Legendary Pictures is developing a new version of Godzilla, which would be different from the bloated 1998 Roland Emmerich/Matthew Broderick disaster.
