Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark 2/14/11 – Variety reported that FilmDistrict has partnered with Miramax to release the Guillermo del Toro-produced Don't Be Afraid of the Dark on Aug. 12. Produced by del Toro and Mark Johnson, "Dark" marks the directorial debut of Troy Nixey. The film is a remake of the 1973 ABC telepic of the same name. Story revolves around a girl who unleashes an evil force in her parents' home.
6/29/10 - Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, a horror movie produced by Guillermo del Toro, will be released under Disney's Miramax banner on January 21, 2011, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The remake of a 1983 TV movie centers on a young girl (Bailee Madison) who is sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the old mansion they are renovating, where she unwittingly unleashes malevolent creatures bent on destroying all of them. Del Toro produced "Dark" with Mark Johnson, and co-wrote the script. Troy Nixey directed.
6/30/09 - Guy Pearce is in final negotiations and Bailee Madison is set to star with Katie Holmes in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Miramax's supernatural thriller being directed by Troy Nixey, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Guillermo Del Toro is producing with Mark Johnson. Dark is based on a 1973 ABC telefilm about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with demonic creatures. Madison will play the girl, who discovers the creatures and is fascinated by them—until they prove dangerous. Pearce will play the father, an author frustrated by his daughter's tales of monsters, not believing her even when his girlfriend backs her. Del Toro and Matthew Robbins wrote the script.

ABC's 1973 cult classic TV movie, written by Nigel McKeand, will be adapted by del Toro with Matthew Robbins. Dark centers on a young girl who is sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend and who discovers sinister creatures living underneath the stairs. The film is in its early stages; research and development of the monsters haven't begun yet. Moviegoers can expect an upscale creature feature along the lines of del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, with an emphasis on distinctive characters in keeping with the Miramax slate.
