5/1/12 - Steve Coogan joins Despicable
Me 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Steve Carell is returning as the voice of Gru, the supervillain
whose heart is melted when he adopts three children. Kristen Wiig,
Russell Brand and Miranda Cosgrove also return as their respective
characters, Miss Hattie, Dr. Nefario and Margo. New to the cast is Al
Pacino as the sequel’s villain.
Directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin also return.
Illumination founder Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy are
producing.

10/5/11 - Javier Bardem is in negotiations to voice a new villain in Despicable Me 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Carell and most of the other players from the first movie are expected to return but the new plot, being kept under wraps, calls for a new villain, who has a son of his own. Bardem would voice the baddie, whose name is El Macho. Universal has set a July 3, 2012 release, which is being directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud.
6/16/11 - Universal announced that Despicable Me 2 opens on July 3, 2013. Despicable Me 2, from Chris Meledandri’s Illumination Entertainment, is a followup to the blockbuster 3D toon that grossed $540 million at the worldwide box office.
