Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament 9/18/09 – SCI FI Wire spoke with Diablo Cody about producing a movie version of S.G. Browne's zombie novel Breathers: A Zombie's Lament. "Yeah, we have a script now," Cody said. "Woo hoo! It's actually an incredibly awesome tight script, so we're going to move forward, attach a director next and the whole lovely development process." It's faithful to the book—Breathers is a zombie love story told from the undead's perspective. Cody says LaTulippe captured Browne's novel accurately. "Very much so," she continued. "Geoff LaTulippe is a great writer." It's funny, too: These zombies try to live normal lives in society. They even go to support groups. All the laughs from the book remain in the script. "Yeah, if you're a fan of the book, I think people are going to be pleased," Cody said.
8/5/09 – SCI FI Wire reported that Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody wants to bring the zombie novel Breathers: A Zombie's Lament to the screen. She will produce the film version, and Geoff LaTulippe is writing the adaptation. "It's kind of a romantic post-modern twist on the typical zombie story," Cody said. "I'm going to produce it along with some other people, and right now that's totally in an embryonic stage." S.G. Browne's novel is a love story about zombies trying to live in a world where non-undead humans are prejudiced against them. This circumvents the whole fast-vs.-slow-zombie debate. "In Breathers, they're normal," Cody said. "They're normal people. They even go to support groups. That's why you need to read the book. It's very interesting."
2/24/09 - Fox Searchlight has acquired rights to the upcoming zombie romantic comedy novel Breathers: A Zombie's Lament by S.G. Browne, which Jennifer's Body writer Diablo Cody will produce, Variety reported. The film will mark Cody's third collaboration with the specialty label following Juno and the upcoming Megan Fox vehicle Jennifer's Body, which Cody also executive-produced. Breathers centers on a recently deceased Everyman and newly minted zombie who is having trouble adjusting to his new existence. All that changes when he goes to an Undead Anonymous meeting and finds kindred souls. Broadway will publish the book March 3. Mason Novick is also producing, and Geoff Latulippe will adapt.
