1/13/11 - CBS Films announced March 4th as the new release date for Vanessa's new movie Beastly. Directed by Daniel Barnz, the romance film is "a modern-day take on the Beauty and the Beast tale where a New York teen is transformed into a hideous monster in order to find true love."
6/24/09 - A "first look" image of star Alex Pettyfer has gone live for Beastly, an edgy teen romance take on the classic Beauty and the Beast fantasy tale starring Vanessa Hudgens and Pettyfer; the movie opens July 30, 2010.
6/4/09 - CBS Films has cast Mary-Kate Olsen opposite Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer in the teen supernatural romance film Beastly, which Daniel Barnz is directing from his own script, Variety reported; Olsen's character places a curse on a handsome, egocentric young man (Pettyfer), who's physically transformed into everything he despises.
3/4/09 – SCI FI Wire reported that Daniel Barnz, who is adapting and directing a film version of Alex Flinn's novel Beastly, said the movie could be the next Twilight. It may not have the following of Stephenie Meyer's series of vampire novels, but it deals with a teen perspective on the fantastical Beauty and the Beast story. "It is a studio film that's a kind of dark teen romance," Barnes said. "It's sort of a curious mixture of Juno, Twilight and Say Anything. The premise is this incredibly magnetic good-looking 17-year-old guy is transformed into somebody who is hideously ugly and must find love in order to reverse that. So there are shades of Beauty and the Beast in it." Barnz is still casting the project for CBS Films. "We're shooting it this spring, so we're just beginning preproduction," he said. Beastly is scheduled for release in 2010.
