Afterburn

4/16/12 - Tommy Wirkola is attached to rewrite and direct Afterburn, Relativity’s adaptation of a sci-fi comic to which Gerard Butler is attached, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Based on the graphic novel by Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens, Afterburn is set in a future where solar flares have left half the world a ravaged wasteland filled with mutants and pirates. Buried beneath the ash and rubble are priceless artifacts and some of the world’s most valuable works of art – for which wealthy Americans will pay any price. The story centers on a treasure hunter who leads his team into the quarantine zone, braving rival bounty hunters, rogue armies, pirate gangs and deadly mutants along the way.  Neal Moritz, Toby Jaffe, Tobey Maguire and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing.

11/16/10 – Variety reported that Gerard Butler is in talks for Relativity Media's sci-fi adventure Afterburn.  Antoine Fuqua is in negotiations to direct. Producers are Moritz, Maguire, Toby Jaffe and Jenno Topping.  Based on the graphic novels published by Red 5 Comics and set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic Earth whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare. Story centers on treasure hunters aiming to extract such items as the Mona Lisa amid competition from rival hunters, mutants and pirates.  Project's based on Matt Johnson's adaptation of the Red 5 title, penned by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood.

1/29/09 - Matt Johnson has been tapped to adapt the sci-fi comic book Afterburn for Relativity Media, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is being produced by Neal Moritz's Original Films and Toby Maguire's Maguire Entertainment banner.  Afterburn is an adventure based on books published by Red 5 Comics, set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic Earth whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare. The surviving life is mutated from radiation and fallout.  The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels while facing rival hunters, mutants and pirates.

03/27/08 - Tobey Maguire will produce Afterburn, an SF movie based on the Red 4 comic book by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood.  The post-apocalyptic story begins one year after a solar flare burns half of Earth. Treasure hunters go back to the scorched portion of the planet to retrieve valuable artifacts.
